Neighbourly Treat

There is a great joy in being surrounded by wonderful neighbours, even more so when these neighbours have  beautiful gardens. Four roses I have already shared are from one of our neighbour's gardens, all taken from outside their yard.

M and R recently discovered why I'm often seen with my camera and enjoyed looking through my blog. At their invitation I delighted in a couple of solo photo walks inside their backyard on Saturday. Here is one of the treasures I found, a tiny, delicate Australian bush orchid in full bloom. I captured other delights too which will be shared in the coming days - thank you M and R for letting us enjoy the beauties of your garden!

  5. Wow! The first especially is simply awesome. How did you manage to get such dark background? Was it nightime?

  6. Hi One. No it wasn't night-time. They have the orchid in a pot at the base of their stairs so I had the camera at about ground level, pointing up at the flowers and under their back deck.

By adjusting light levels and contrast and a little retouching - all in iPhoto, I was able to achieve a black background. It was quite a challenge to do. I didn't want to touch the flowers or pot so was restricted as to which angles would work. It was mid-afternoon, so plenty of natural light. I'm really happy with the end result.
