A New Purple Sea




 The glorious jacaranda "purple rain" is coming to an end as the agapanthus are coming into full bloom. One sea of purple replacing another as several road-side garden strips are mass planted with agapanthus, mostly light purple, some white and an occasional deep purple. There are also many beautiful purple flower heads within people's own yards.







Earlier this month I found this flower head beginning to split open.




Nine days later the same flower head is gradually maturing a little more each day.







The three photos above were all taken early one morning. You can see the anthers just beginning to break open.







By early afternoon the anthers were open, pollen fully exposed.




As I was turning to leave I found a new bud on another agapanthus plant, rippling with purple florets just beneath the skin - can you can see the tinge of purple? More miracles about to burst into the big world for all to see.

    I love Agapanthus, they are such interesting flowers to photograph at any stage of their growth.

    i love agapanthus, and this indigenous South African flower seems to be doing better down there than here in my garden...your photographs are lovely...

    It's amazing to see how different countries have their own kind of flowers popping forth. I cannot wait for spring to head out with my cam and capture some blooms. As of now, everything is bare...:(

    We have these here in Brazil, too, but I never knew their name (although I've heard a common name which I won't repeat here, ha!).Perhaps our climates are similar? These are SO lovely, both the flower and the photos.

    Stunning pictures! Agapanthus are truly glorious flowers! Though they seem to be taking their time coming out this year in Melbourne. Perhaps it's not been hot enough yet.

    I always find agapanthus so interesting ... it looks so unassuming with its slender leaves ... then suddenly it sprouts these unexpectedly large blooms in spectacular fashion. Lovely captures.
