The recipe book lay open on the kitchen bench overnight. Before breakfast was had a cake was mixed and in the oven. Miss G and Miss N (both 14) had carefully planned a celebration of the first international cricket match of the season - South Africa v's Australia in Brisbane this morning.
Schoolwork and morning jobs were completed very early. The cake was iced and decorated and set on the little coffee table, waiting. As the first ball was being bowled the cake was cut. They were hoping for a wicket, instead South Africa scored two runs off this ball.
The game continued as they cut and shared the cake, seven of our children perched in front of the TV.
I'll let them be for an hour or so, then it will be time for some play and work of their own.
I love that such things are worth celebrating to them.
Cheering is now heard, a wicket just taken.....excitement! They are hoping their own cricket games won't be rained off late this afternoon.

Karen, I am really really sure that your children are going to have such fond, specific memories of their childhood. What a lovely time for them today, to celebrate in such an interactive and fun way, something that is meaningful for them.
