Simple Life Quilt

The fabric for the binding (outer edge, the last stage of making a quilt) arrived in the mail yesterday - 24 hours later The Simple Life quilt was finished and ready for snuggling under. Miss E (5) loves her/our new quilt, especially the blocks which she hand stitched around, one on the front and one on the back. It's been wonderful to work on a quick, fun and simple quilt after my two year journey with Sunlit Treasure.

Winter is near, we've used the heater a little the last few days and seek the sunshine to help us warm up during the day. I can see this quilt being well used.

Quilty Details

Dimensions: 41" X 50"
Special Techniques: Fussy cut pieces were raw edge machine stitched in place (no fusing) then most were hand embroidered/stitched in red DMC embroidery floss (Miss E chose to stitch her block for the back in green DMC).
My own design, pieced and straight-line quilted on my 28 year old Janome.

The feature fabric is from Tasha Noel's The Simple Life fabric range as are the aqua gingham and aqua bunting. The little mushrooms, large red dot and the red "Little Leaves" binding are from Tasha's recently released Little Red Riding Hood range. Remaining fabrics from my stash.

  2. I absolutely LOVE this playful and joyful quilt! It will make cold winter evenings so cosy.
We've been having Autumn weather here: rain, wind, cold,.... with a lot of sneezing, colds, throataches and headaches as a result.
    Bye, enjoy your week,
    Marian

  3. It's beautiful! And Miss E is so adorable pointing out the block she stitched!

I'm working on my first quilt. It's a small one, a wall hanging. I'm to the point where I need to hand stitch around the blocks but I don't know how to hand stitch. I'll be checking out you-Tube videos for instructions.

Have a great day. Stay warm!

  39. Such a cute quilt! I love that your daughter helped. I am especially interested in how you got the back squares to line up perfectly with the front squares for your FMQ to line up so wonderfully. I am making a postage stamp quilt and am putting a few rows on the back and was trying to figure out the best way to make it all line up for the diagonal quilting. Your input would sure help! Thanks.

  40. Thank you Cheryl, lovely to hear from you.
Keeping your backing and top square with each other helps a lot. From memory, while preparing my quilt sandwich I think I used some regular pins on my batting to mark where my backing squares were located, then I used those to help when placing the top (then removing the pins of course). The front and back aren’t perfectly aligned but are pretty close.

This may be more difficult for a postage stamp quilt as your squares are likely much smaller and the diagonal stitching is less forgiving. I’m sure it will look great anyway, especially if you can keep your top and back square with each other.
