My heart is full. Pretty Checkerboard quilt is complete and today reached the person it was lovingly made for. There is something very special about choosing fabrics and design with a brand new person in mind. This gorgeous little girl already has the use of a small baby quilt - the very first quilt I ever made - which was sewn for one of her cousins. For this reason I made a larger quilt with a view to it lasting her many years. The last photo, taken today (sent to me via text), looks like the beginning of a beautiful quilt story.
Quit details: Keeping to a soft pink and green colour scheme, I selected many favourites from my treasured fabrics, with a sprinkling of organic fabrics. The backing fabric is called Patio Lights from Tamara Kate's Flight Patterns collection. The batting is Hobb's Organic Cotton batting from Texas. Quilting in the ditch along each seam line. I used Rita Hodge's checkerboard quilt tutorial, cutting fabrics into strips of 3"x13". Following Rita's directions this yields finished squares of 2 1/2" with each 4x4 block being 10" square. With six rows of four blocks each, the finished quilts measures approximately 40" x 60".
Gratulation... This quilt looks wonderful again. And a sweet baby on it.

ReplyDeleteGiga these are beautiful little flowers called Abelia, blooming through our summer heat. Abelia belongs to the honeysuckle family. However they do look as pretty as ice.

ReplyDeleteI'm starting my day here in the US a bit early but slowly. It is going to be a total (well almost!) quilting day. I'm sitting I bed reading a few blogs and smile when I see you've posted one. It always is a treat. And of course, I'm smiling as I read it. A cute quilt for a sweet new baby, mention of your first quilt still in use. AND I'm sitting under a quilt that has the same fabric in it as you put on the back. I snapped a picture to add to this comment but then I realized I can't do that...or at least I don't know how to do that.

Hi Christine, it is now early Sunday morning here and yours is the first email I read for the day. :) What a beautiful way to start my day. I can imagine you snuggled under a warm quilt made with some of these same fabrics and there’s a greater sense of connection. I hope your day of sewing has been progressing well! ReplyDeleteYou can't beat the last photo for knowing your quilt is special and loved. With such a wee little thing resting there the quilt seems huge. I was surprised to see it's just 40 x 40. So pretty . . . both baby and quilt.
ReplyDeleteI was thrilled to receive the photo with Baby C, as you can imagine. Yes, the quilt does look larger than 40 x 60 in the photo. Baby C is very small - she is only a few weeks old, was born several weeks early and is very petite.
