Phyllis Hatched!!! Phyllis Hatched!!!

To the excitement of all, Phyllis the caterpillar emerged from her "lifeless" chrysalis yesterday! We took her back to the broccoli plants where she was first discovered and released her. She quickly fluttered a few metres away to the neighbour's cumquat tree where she rested for over an hour, finally open in her wings fully.

I was quite relieved as Sparky and Fire didn't make it to chrysalis stage and I didn't know if Phyllis would hatch at all - but she did and now joins the many Cabbage White Butterflies dancing around our garden.   :)

  10. Hello Karen,
That's nice to see butterfly came out. Funny to see when he fly away and goes to the branches of the fruit tree.

  12. Funny you say that Anita. Phyllis is/was Miss E's (5 yr) pet caterpillar, she named it Phyllis which she thought was a boy's name - maybe it should have been Phil!

  19. Thanks Elise. I'm tempted to grow broccoli again next year not only for their crop but also so we can "harvest" caterpillars!

  21. We are in the season of watching our munching caterpillars cocoon. We plant lots of parsley for that purpose alone.

  22. Hi Cathy. We have many several parsley plants but none attract caterpillars here. What caterpillars does your parsley attract?

  26. It is interesting that you and your family have observed the metamorphosis of the white butterfly Karen. I have seen a monarch do it but not a white butterfly. I think that all butterflies are amazing creatures and are so clever the way that they can maneuver with those apparently clumsy wings. They are so clever. And I am convinced that white butterflies are very intelligent too Have you seen the try to rescue another injured butterfly? - Dave
