Working on possible combinations with my fabric strips. |
Our new lounge was delivered the day after we finished repainting our main living areas. Some of you may remember
I was thinking of making cushions covers from my quilt left-overs. Over the last few days I have been working towards that end. I sewed fabrics together, enough for two cushions fronts.
Basting the completed top to cotton quilt batting (middle layer) and back fabric. |
Stippling in progress |
Stippling from the reverse side. The green thread is the basting (temporary), holding the layers together. |
My trusty Janome, over 25 years old, darning foot for stippling. |
First cushion front, cut this morning. |
A simple envelope closure in progress. |
First cushion complete! I know it looks a little large (45cm/18") for the lounge but it's a very comfortable size. I plan to complete the second cover during the week, and buy an insert for it too.

I know I'm always curious about the backs of cushions, so here it is. I didn't have enough of the main print to cover the whole back so added another strip along the top and bottom. I like the variety it gives. The second cushion back will likely be a little different according the fabric I have left.
I'm pleased to see the quilt hasn't faded much, I like them together!
It's two years this month since I taught myself to quilt (although I have been sewing since I was a very young child).
My first quilt (a gift) is still one of my favourites, you can read the story here. Since then I have made several quilts, many of which I blogged about earlier this year.
Over the last few months photography and blogging have been my choice for "spare" time. I love having many interests, with passions to suit each and every situation and season.

I am in awe of you. That's it. In awe.
Love the bright colors!
absolutely lovely ! and what a great idea for using leftovers from your quilts!
Oh my goodness. I love it.. I would love to do some quilting. I do sew but not for awhile. Only on my cards. The colors you chose are beautiful. You have to be so happy with the way they turned out!!
Beautiful! And so colorful and creative! You are so talented!

Very pretty. I've only ever made one quilt. I hope to make more and I want to learn to stipple too!
Wow, the cushion is excellent. You have done a great job.
Your stippling looks really nice and I love those colors in the strips. They remind me of citrus colors. The green makes them all stand out. I have never tried to stipple with my sewing machine. I will have to try a darning foot too. Thanks for the head's up and for sharing :)
Great Job, I love the fresh colours!
Very neat designs, good for the eyes !
I love the fresh look, they make a lovely addition to your sofa. Thank you for the link to your first quilt as well, you did such a beautiful job, no one would have suspected it was your first!
Oh... I love those fabrics!! So pretty!
You are very talented!
Wow.. these are gorgeous.
I totally admire your work!
No wonder you can do it so quickly.
I was wondering how.
The reason being that I handmake my patchwork. Every single stitch. No wonder they never seem to get finished. It may be authentic, but doesn't it take an age:-) And I source my fabrics from secondhand shops. I'm not complaining because the entire process is actually very therapeutic and calming.
Hannah, there are so many styles/concepts of patchwork and quilting, with opportunities for all tastes and time-restictions. The hexagon quilt I shared on my blog is all stitched by hand, including the quilting.
you are very skilled:)! great work!
Bardzo pomysłowe. Trochę pracy wymaga, ale są świetne efekty :-). Pozdrawiam

Simply gorgeous, Karen!!! And I think the size is perfect. I prefer a good sized cushion rather than one too small. You really are so very creative!! I am in awe!
Wer unter so einer Decke schläft und mit dem Kopf auf so einem Kissen liegt, der muss bunte, fröhliche Träume haben. :-)
So schön! Eine wunderbare Arbeit!
Liebe Grüße. Bina
Great job and colors!
How nice! I still know how to use a sewing machine for basic sewing, though it's been a while since I've last used it, but I don't think I'd manage to make a pillow case.
I know I've mentioned before about my fascination with a quilter's ability to combine so many colours and patterns together and bring it into one - exactly as you've done here. Looks great against the lounge.
ohh..Karen this looks fab. really...I love the colors and you sew very well. I am in process of creating play area/family room in basement and I so badly need new cushions for that..wish I could sew like you:)
Lovely work,
It looks very nice. Well done.

How wonderfully creative of you to use the left over this way. The cushion looks lovely and a great match for the quilt.
