A conversation a few days ago with our 4 year old, as she looked at our white primed/undercoated walls:
"Does Bunnings (hardware superstore) only have white paint?"
Just the beginning |
"No, they have all sorts of colours," I replied.
"Do they have stripes paint?"
"Well no, but you can..." I began to explain.
"I know," Miss E suggested, " how about we paint one ceiling lellow, one ceiling purple and one ceiling brown!"
I wonder what she had in mind for the walls! I decided not to ask...
Our terrific trio (our middle guys 12, 14, 14) have done a marvellous job over the last two weeks. The younger three were very keen to help also. They all helped with the scraping and sanding and after their initial attempt with the brush we decided we pay the younger three NOT to help with the painting....
Our peeling hallway and our toilet room, including 7 doorways and 5 doors, all with old original tiered skirting boards and door trims, were all badly in need of scraping and repainting. High ceilings make the job more of a challenge.
Their hourly rate? Some time off school work and less than a dollar an hour each. They were happy and so were we. This is their 4th painting job over the last few years, becoming better each time (with a little delegation, assistance and quality control).
Finishing touches completed and drop-cloths removed yesterday, bookshelves back in place today, and not a purple ceiling anywhere in sight!

Beautiful clicks... SO u decided to paint the walls white again .... !! The walls look great ... and the rates seem much lesser ;-) ;-)... Hope you guys had a great time working as a family !!!
Yes, an off-white, the same as our lounge and dining area. Somewhat lighter than the old neutral colour and it brings more light into the house too, especially good for the hallway. It's certainly great to have the job done.
Karen
A great one for your family photo history. Like it

Fantastic shots! Adorable kids:)
Thanks for sharing.
Hope to see you on my blog:)
fantastic images :). hardworking and beautiful children....
Oh no, I was hoping to see the lellow and purple ceilings. :) These would be fun in a child's eyes.
Oh, great shots for the family album indeed! You do have beautiful children and so helpful -- some more than others, as always, but it's the effort that counts!! They certainly speak well for their parents! Enjoy your weekend!

What a lovely and attractive bunch of kids you have. May be Miss E can have 'lellow' in her own room sometime!
A wonderful post, you are blessed with these kids!
Best regards, Marion
That's hard work, good that everyone helps. Respect.
Greetings,
Filip
Beautiful to see your kids are helping. Have a lovely weekend Karen
Great shots! I came across your blog today and just had to comment. I normally don't like music on blogs, but the music you have on here is so beautiful and soothing...and the sound of the birds is enchanting! Thank you so much for sharing, your blog is fantastic! Greetings from Montreal, Canada.
This post brings back memories of when My husband and daughter and me painted the inside of our house. My husband made us listen to Johhny cash music the whole time. It was torture.. We laugh about it now..
Hugs, LInda
They make a good team, a well done project.
As soon as I opened the page I smiled. Lovely image and memories. Your babies wont forget and I wont for a while. So glad you shared this.
As much as I'd like it to be different, it's been another week where I haven't had a chance to sit down and appreciate work such as yours. In commenting on your previous post, I'm in amazement of that 6th photo - wow. WOW. Am so pleased a similar photo was recognised in shoot.edit.submit - well done. Sounds like the hallway is finished - you must be so sick of those orange dropsheets! Love little miss e's commentary and opinions on the colours.
Kudos to the kids for doing such a fine job and being great team players. I'm sure you're glad it's all over and the house is getting back to normal again......hoping all those smelly paint fumes have gone too.
A wonderful blog Karen. Its nice to see your family all "muckin-in" - Dave
You've got quite the diligent crew! My 9 year old Grands offered to paint my swing this summer (but it's outside). The best part - they said they'd do it for free and some of my famous banana bread.
Do they have stripes paint? LOL! That is so precious! And what a wonderful family you have! I love how everyone takes part in being 'part' of the family and also doing the work that keeps the family together and strong. You are lovely, Karen. And so is your beautiful family.
I have enjoyed watching the scraping and painting efforts of your lovely children over the months... and seeing your home restored. There's nothing like a new coat of paint to brighten the home. You have such lovely children. God bless, Karen xxoo
Just saw this post and it amazes me completely. Here I am trying to fit in some painting into my tight schedule while I have three children running around, dropping off their laundry after two weeks of camp and today again gone again for helping elsewhere. Maybe I should let them follow your children's example ;-) What a great job they did!
Bye,
Marian
