Hand Quilting

The weekend was a little cooler and I couldn't resist making a start on the hand quilting. Last month I ordered three variegated Sulky threads and some white. It's been a happy coincidence that these two reels of Sulky Blendables work perfectly with this quilt.

I've been really enjoying using these threads for the hand quilting. So far I have quilted five blocks out of twenty-four. As a novice at hand quilting I'm finding my fingers become sore from handling the needle (think steel string guitar) if I work on it too long. I quilted the fifth block this afternoon as one of the younger children practiced reading to me.

Very pretty, looks like you'll have it finished in no time at all.

Hi,
I was only thinking of you the other day and wondering how you were.
I was thrilled to see you blogging.
I love hand quilting and your colours look so fresh and clean.
I have a beautiful leather thimble I bought over 15 years ago with a small metal part for pushing on. I love this for handwork as it makes it so easy.
Love your blog K. It will be wonderful to keep in touch this way.
God Bless
Gae

Hi Gae, I'm pleased you have "found" me.
I would love to sit with you and have you teach me the finer details of hand quilting (as well as meeting IRL).
I've looked in books but it's not the same.
:)

I love the variegated thread! Handquilting to me is like what your blog title implies...a piece of contentment.

Yes Cathy, there is something soothing and pleasant about hand quilting. I love that I don't need to set up the sewing machine, that it is movable to any spot and that it is silent.
