'Framed' - Umbrella Prints Trimmings Challenge

'Stoneflowers in Turtledove and HB' - a delightful name for a wonderfully unique print, one of my favourite from the Australian textiles house, Umbrella Prints.

Specialising in organic printed fabrics, Umbrella Prints offers an exciting range of distinctive designs. This is the 6th year of their annual Umbrella Prints Trimmings Challenge. I purchased their 'Flowers' trimmings pack (above), a great way to sample these fabrics with the opportunity to participate in the design challenge.

Yesterday I added the last stitches to this playful, small quilt which I have been busily working on over the last week since completing my larger Butterfly Kisses quilt. Time to share some details of this little surprise quilt. If you hover over each image below the name of the prints used will appear.

Umbrella Prints

These Umbrella Print fabrics have been a delight to work with. They are a pleasant weight and all organic, the designs and colours are refreshing. In keeping with the Trimmings theme I have utilised many of my organic fabric offcuts, selvedges and leftovers from recent projects, resulting in a mix of sizes and slightly wonky fabric pieces (Cirrus solids by Cloud 9). It really was a fun project.

All fabrics, batting and thread used are organic. The binding is organic Alchemy by Amy Buttler - a perfect edging for this quilt which I have named 'Framed' as each Umbrella Prints Trimming print has been highlighted by either fabric or quilted 'frames'.

I love the effect of the fringing too! Is that part of your scraps, or from the Umbrella prints? Either way, it looks great! And such a soft colour palette!

The fringing is the wonderfully soft selvedges from Cloud 9's Cirrus solids - too beautiful to discard. :)

Thanks Erin - I’ve had some encouraging comments from the family too. :)

Well, this might be one of my favorites. I know quilting isn't about speed, but I would love to know approximately how long it took you to make your quilts. I need motivation....or maybe a reality check!

Thank you Anita! This small fun quilt took me a week of a little sewing here and a little there. Not that long as I was just taking each Trimmings piece one at a time and playfully working with it. In the end I had to bring them all together in a way which looked ok. My previous quilt, Butterfly Kisses took much longer.....

Oh my goodness Karen - this is so beautiful. I can't stop gazing at it - it oozes calmness and peace and I can just imagine you slowly enjoying each stitch as you made it. Stunning xx

This is really different from your usual style, but equally lovely! I bet it was a fun project.

The prints are so dainty and whimsical. Will this be a hanging quilt? It reminds me of a summer garden.

Karen @ Pieces of Contentment said...

Yes Barb, I plan to add a hanging sleeve to the back so it will hang well on a wall. Some of my children think it should be gifted as a play mat for a baby girl but we know of no baby girls.

Beautiful soft colourings in this fabric! Love how you have used them in this quilt. Stunning!

Thank you Country Mum- rather different to a symmetrical project but lots of fun with no rules.

This is just so delicate and beautiful. The fringed edges add a different dimension to the design. You are so clever.

I really love this! It is treat for the eyes! And the close-ups of your piecing are just wonderful, and the several selvedges so playful! And yes, perfect binding, too :)

This is just stunning. Well done you!!
I too purchased some of their trimming packs, with plans to enter this year. Needless to say, inspiration didn't strike, so I have some lovely scraps for another project.

Good luck.

Thanks Julie. I ordered just the one pack and wasn’t sure if I would use it as I was determined to complete Butterfly Kisses first. Thankfully the Umbrella Trimmings quilt has been a fun and refreshing change of pace between larger projects.
