I thought it was all about the lollies, which I am loathe to buy.
He said it was all about having fun. He had seen one on TV and had an idea.
We didn't have a balloon big enough so they used three balloons which were later joined together.
It was a joint effort over several days. No arguing, lots of discussion and sharing while I just looked on. A unique homemade piñata gradually took shape.
Then the birthday morning came. Master T was now a teenager! He had blown up the balloons (with a bike pump) and carefully strung them together the night before, in preparation for our family birthday tradition of streamers and balloons.
He also made his own sponge cake which fell apart as he tried to remove it from the tin. I suggested trifle, Master T and Miss E (20) did the rest. Marshmallows and candles completed the job.
Now was the time to put Master T's great theory to the test, hockey stick in hand. Everyone except Miss E (20) and I took turns.
HE WAS RIGHT, it was great fun to watch as each took turns to try and smash the piñata. SO much fun and laughter. Eventually the piñata broke in stages, scattering colourful sweets everywhere.
Time to quietly roast marshmallows over a candle. A beautiful evening......
Morning light revealed remnants, bearing silent witness to the previous night's excitement. I think a new family birthday tradition has just been discovered - thanks to Master T.

Very enterprising to make his own piñata, which worked, and also to turn the collapsed cake into a trifle birthday cake - well done.

What a FUN post! Did you know that originally the pinata was a 7-pointed star which stood for the 7 deadly sins in the Catholic tradition, and in Mexico it became a way to destroy the 7 sins and reap a sweet reward, as a morality lesson for the kids. I didn't know that till I moved here. Of course, you see pinatas of all kinds here. How clever of your son making his own!!! And the birthday celebration looks like fantastic fun! I loved all the pictures.
About the Canyon....you are so right about photographing it! Sadly, I had planned to catch several different light environments, including a sunset, on our return the next day, and then we didn't return. I brought both my little digital and my Nikon 35mm with a 28-85 mm lens. I hope we can go back at some point and spend an entire day. The train was SUCH FUN but I really needed a full day at the Canyon....after hiking it a couple of times, doing the Clark Griswald dash of the Canyon (from the movie Vacation) was a little difficult for me! :-)
Pinatas are so much fun ! That must have been his best birthday !
Happy Birthday Master T!!!
The concentration while making and then the joy while trying to hit the pinata splashes from the screen. Beautiful images of an unforgettable day,
Bye,
Marian
That all looks like so much fun! Great photos, as always!
Great fun indeed! Excellent story, love the pictures. The first picture is stunning!
Best regards, marion
I love family traditions. Moments to be treasured.
Pinata's are fun, I have done them in the past with little toys as well.
fabulous!! :))
i like it!
Oh how I love this "T"
We made a pinata through all our kids youth... each and every birthday.
You have brought this all back to me ... and all the 'fun'!
this was beautiful to witness! Thank you. I love every part of it, especially your son's heart and laughter in it !
Interesantes y dulces imágenes.

Happy Birthday Master T. What a fun way to celebrate...I had a good time just looking at the pictures.
What a fantastic birthday celebration!! Looks like so much fun!
Happy Birthday, Master T. Lovely photographs !! Thanks for the great idea !!
Wonderful photographic record of the birthday event. And great that your son came up with such a good idea and carried it to a happy finale!
That now teenager of yours - my goodness! So, here's what I'm visualising.... his first book published with the title '121 Activities for Children When Rain Is Pouring'. I so enjoyed looking through all these shots, and would have loved to pop up to share in the toasted marshmallows.
What fun ... I can see the excitement on their faces ... and your last capture is just gorgeous.
It looks like a lot of fun! Such a bright happy celebration and a lot of pretty pictures to remember it by. I had to smile at the roasting marshmallows over a candle. I used to do that myself some years ago. It's very therapeutic when you've had a bad day - ha, ha. ;-)
So much more than a pinata... It's about creating and participating in your own future, taking chances, bringing plans to fruition, putting in the work and enthusiasm, and being supported and celebrated by a wonderful family!
A great lesson was learned, learing to work together is key and thinking out a project to the end and having a good time in the process. Wonderful post!
Happy Birthday to Master T and may he have many more.
What a marvelous post!! I have to say that I love your children... their sweetness and the closeness of your family moves me deeply. My own 2 children are grown and I was only able to raise one of them (my son).
I am also from a very large family (9 children, I am #7 and the only girl) while we had our own birthday traditions and what not... I really love the special things you are doing with your children and the subsequent memories you are creating will be very wonderful, warm highlights for your heart when they are grown. Bless you!
Es macht so viel Feude, die schönen Fotos anzuschaeun, so viel schönes Leben, so viel Freude.
LG Mathilda ♥
What fun :)
Oh what wonderful memories you will have. He was right.
It was great to see these happy family pictures Karen. Thanks for sharing - Dave
Looks like fun...the last two photos say it all. Happy B-day to him!

Happy Belated Birthday Master T!
Beautiful pictures of a loving family! Cheers, Ruby
That is so awesome that he did so much to prepare for his party himself! Having made 4 piñatas for my kids' birthdays before, I can confidently point out that the only way they're getting THOSE again is if they make them themselves! ;) Looks like a great party was had...
A colorful and festive birthday celebration, indeed! Love the way it was documented with great shots.
Cheers ... visiting from Weekly Top Shot!

Happy belated birthday to Mr T. And, what wonderful fun for all.
We have almost finished our run of 7 September birthdays - 6 birthdays in 13 days and now only one more left!
What super fun. I love the process of creating the pinata, I do cringe a little when they are waving the stick around though. Happy belated 13th to your boy:)
